moveable shelterAt Windblest Farm, we provide a healthy, comfortable environment for our sheep: adequate shelter, good food and proper care.

During the summer months, the sheep rotate through a series of paddocks protected from predators by electric fencing, and from the elements by moveable shelters .

Winter days are spent at the barn, with outdoor access restricted only at lambing. Newborns spend their first hours bonding with their mothers in heated jugs before moving to larger quarters. Fresh air and room to play come as soon as weather allows.

grain bucketThe pastures provide ample grazing for a portion of the year. A custom mixed grain and mineral combination is used as a supplement at certain times for all the sheep; and from birth to maturity for the lambs. First and second cut hay, harvested from the farm, helps get all the animals through the winter. Blue salt and fresh water are always available.

Shearing takes place in April and October. Fall shearing provides the fleece that is used in wool production. In the spring, the winter and lambing damaged coats come off. This fleece is not suitable for any use.  Border Leicester sheep, in particular, grow such long coats that annual shearing is not enough.

Health is monitored throughout the year, with the able assistance of the Perth Veterinary Clinic.  The flock is regularly tested for Maedi Visna, or Ovine Progressive Pneumonia, and has earned an “A” with the Maedi-Visna Flock Status Pilot Project. We also participate in the Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program.

Sound management practices allow us to feel comfortable with the breeding stock, meat lamb and wool that is produced on the farm, and allow our customers to have confidence in what they are buying.
